I’m Caleb Thomas, the Columbus, Ohio live wedding painter and owner behind Caleb Thomas Art LLC. I genuinely believe I have one of the best jobs in the world. Wedding guests often joke about their stick-figure drawing skills or ask to be penciled into the painting, and my laugh is real every single time—because I truly love being part of these celebrations and capturing them in a meaningful way.
When I'm not painting, you can usually find me spending time with my family. I married the love of my life, Autumn, in Jamaica in 2022. Together, we have two amazing sons. I couldn't be more thankful that I get to do life with them.

Live wedding painting is the process of creating a painting during your wedding while guests watch the artwork come to life in real time. I begin the painting on-site, capturing a meaningful moment of your choice. As the evening unfolds, the scene gradually takes shape on the canvas for guests to enjoy. After the wedding, I complete the final details in my studio so the finished painting becomes a piece of artwork that brings you back to that moment each time you see it.

I paint with oil, a traditional fine art medium that has been used for centuries. While many live wedding painters work with acrylic because it dries quickly during events, painting with oils is much less common. Oil paint allows for deeper color, softer lighting transitions, and a richness that helps the finished piece feel timeless. It also allows me to continue refining the painting in my studio after the wedding so the final artwork feels polished and complete. Painting with oil also means that the final painting will more easily resemble a museum quality piece of art rather than just an event piece.

A live wedding painting adds a point of interest for guests during the reception as they watch the artwork develop throughout the evening. After the wedding, when I’m completing the final details of the painting in my studio, I invite couples to choose a small symbol that represents something meaningful from their relationship or wedding day. It might reflect a shared interest, a special place, or a personal memory. I then incorporate that element naturally into the painting so it becomes part of the scene. To most viewers it simply appears as a beautiful painting, but for the couple it adds another layer of meaning and storytelling to the artwork.

Yes. Couples choose the moment they’d most like to see captured in their live wedding painting. Some choose a scene from the ceremony, such as the first kiss or walking back down the aisle, while others prefer a moment from the reception like the first dance. Some couples also choose to pose for a reference photo. I’m comfortable painting a wide variety of scenes, so the moment can be tailored to whatever feels most meaningful to you.

Yes! I’m based in Columbus, Ohio and I regularly travel across Ohio and the surrounding states to do live wedding paintings. I also have limited availability to travel domestically and internationally.

Yes! I offer many different add ons, including: thank you cards, frames, additional paintings, prints, etc.

After the wedding, I bring the painting back to my studio to complete the final details and refinements. The painting also needs time to dry fully before I apply a final varnish, which protects and seals the artwork. Because of this process, the finished painting is typically ready for delivery about 6–8 weeks after the wedding.

A commission painting is a painting that I complete in my studio, rather than at a live event. I regularly do portrait commission paintings for weddings that have already happened, family portraits, pet portraits, etc.
